It’s supposed to be a magnificent day here tomorrow, and I managed to reserve a beautiful spot in one of our State Parks that’s located within an old growth forest, so I’m off for a couple of days in the woods.
It is just going to be a short overnight trip, a shakedown cruise of sorts to figure out how everything works on the crazy little antique trailer I bought last week. So far I’ve only set it up in my front yard and towed it the half a dozen or so blocks from the classic car showroom to my house.
This will be the test.
I’m going alone, because I figure I’ll manage to forget a few things that I need. By not taking Mrs. Bailey with me, I avoid torturing her unnecessarily.
While packing the little thing today, I loaded up my nifty little traveling Tarot kit. And, I realized that I’ve never actually read Tarot in the woods before.
I read Tarot all the time, here in my house. Once in a while on my patio. Plenty inside other buildings too. A single time on a 65 foot long sailboat in the middle of Puget Sound.
But, never in the woods.
And throughout my entire life, the woods are the place I’ve always felt most at home, and indeed the closest presence of the divine.
So, that’s my plan tomorrow.
I’ll set up my rare little relic from 1959 in order to come up with a list of things I should have packed inside of it.
And then I’ll head off on a trail, through the old growth, to read Tarot.
Thinking about it now, I don’t know why I never thought to take a Tarot deck into the woods with me in the past. I suppose just something in the back of my mind reminded me that cards are fragile, and Western Washington is wet and windy.
But, it is certainly true that I do feel the presence of divinity when I’m deep in the woods, so I am extremely curious to see how that might play out in any readings I do.
I will of course, report back!
Meaningless trivia No. 1:
My extremely short tow was disconcerting. I’ve towed a lot through the years, but my Airstream was 21 feet longer than my new relic, and about 4500 pounds heavier. I could see and feel it back there. This new one is so small and light that I can neither see it nor feel it while driving.

The photo above is not where I’m staying, but it is nearby. One would never know it by looking at my fat ass today, but as a youngster I climbed my way to the very top of that mountain on two separate occasions. Talk about feeling a divine presence.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have tarot cards with me,
And miles to go before I read,
And miles to go before I read.
